"May the heavens be your blanket while you sleep."
To truly experience the beauty of the region’s extraordinary natural diversity, spend a night or two or three camping. It is through camping you can truly see – and experience – the dramatic personality of the high desert.
The Moab area has more than 1,000 campsites, some public, others private. Camp only in designated areas that have toilets, fire grates and refuse containers. Bring your own water and firewood. Gathering wood is not permitted in any area. Water is most likely not available.
Perhaps the most well known campground is located at the Sand Flats Recreation Area, developed through the collaborative efforts of Americorps, Bureau of Land Management, Grand County and the Moab community. Managed by Grand County and BLM, Sand Flats has 110 campsites, open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers need to bring in all their drinking water.
Cost:
- $8/night per car up to 4 people
- $2 each additional person
- Your camping fee covers your user fee for the Slickrock Trail
The Bureau of Land Management operates 20 well-maintained campgrounds excellent for family-oriented camping. Campsites available on a first-come, first-served basis, limited to 14 days within a 30-day period. Open-air vault toilets, metal fire rings, picnic tables, grills and trash receptacles. RV sites have no hookups. You can find designated campsites from $5 to $10 along the Colorado River on Hwy 128 from Dewey Bridge to Goose Island, and at Fisher Towers from $10, first-come, first-served.
Privately owned campgrounds have showers, running water, RV hook-ups, flush toilets and usually accept reservations.

Tips and Etiquette
- Campfires are allowed in grates only
- Don't take food into a tent. You don't want an animal sharing your tent.
- Store toiletries with your food. Like other scents, the smell of toiletries attracts wild animals.
- Keep all trash in secure trash bags
- Be a responsible camper. Avoid loud music. Be considerate of when and how long you run your generator.
