When most people think of rock climbers, they envision the daredevil athletes from television crawling like spiders up overhanging walls. Rock climbing has grown in popularity ten-fold in the past decades and people from all walks of life are discovering the challenge, joy and freedom which make climbing such a unique and fulfilling activity.

The desert surrounding Moab is an international destination for climbers of all abilities. Many people come to Moab for other sports and find themselves inspired by the cliffs and towers to try rock climbing. Others plan their trips around rock climbing and return yearly to explore the desert’s nearly limitless resources, from Indian Creek Canyon to the Towers of Castle Ridge.

The desert has a well-deserved reputation for the seriousness of its climbs, approaches and weather. What this means to the beginner is that, while the desert can be a great place to learn to climb, it is imperative to go with a guide to learn the correct climbing techniques and intended use of each piece of equipment. Even climbers who come to Moab with a long background in the sport often find that they do not own enough gear for the long, sustained routes. So, if you want to feel those rocks, smell the desert air and climb for the love of climbing and the camaraderie that comes with the activity, hook up with a guide and get on the rocks and climb.

Canyoneering

Southern Utah has the highest concentration of slot canyons anywhere in the world. Belaying, rappelling, and anchor building are all techniques used in rock climbing, yet are necessary in canyoneering. Because of flash floods, temperature extremes and remoteness, it pays to have some technical skills under your harness before “dropping in”. Add hiking, and wading and you now have an incredible adventure for everyone. To literally get your feet wet try hiring a professional guide to introduce you to the special skills of this exciting sport.
